A Calne pub is helping mother-of-two Michelle Smith raise £6,000 for a specially adapted bathroom for her disabled son.

The Kings Arms Pub in High Street is holding a series of fundraising events for the family.

Kieran, four, suffers from cerebral palsy and is unable to walk.

His mother, who also has a one-year-old daughter Tianna, wants to install a shower on the ground floor to give Kieran greater independence.

Originally she intended to extend the back of the house in Stokes Croft to create a downstairs bedroom and bathroom for Kieran.

However the extension proved too expensive and Miss Smith had to change her plans.

A stair lift was installed in the house after Key Day Nurseries in Lickhill Road generously raised £1,000.

Miss Smith said both of the children sat mesmerised at the bottom of the stairs watching the workmen fit the stair lift which gives Kieran greater mobility to go up and down to his bedroom and prevents him from being isolated from the rest of the house.

Previously Kieran had been unable to get upstairs to play with friends.

Miss Smith said the next stage was to create a bathroom equipped for Kieran's disability on the ground floor, which will allow her to potty-train Kieran.

"He is unable to walk or stand. Going up and down on the stair lift is not practical if it is several times an hour whilst he is being potty trained."

She said having a bathroom downstairs which Kieran could use on his own would give him much greater independence.

"He is getting older now and needs his independence. All the facilities he needs, he needs on the ground floor.

"It will be kitted out so he can go into the bathroom on his own whenever he needs to."

Miss Smith has arranged a series of events in conjunction with the Kings Arms to help raise the money.

Pub manager Sean Harflett said he was happy to help because Miss Smith was a friend of his and he knew Kieran well.

The pub is organising a raffle and a karaoke night over the coming weeks.

The raffle will be held on April 8 at 9pm. Local businesses have donated prizes including a meal for two at the Bug and Spider pub.

The karaoke will be held on May 1 and is expected to pull in a big crowd.

"We always get a lot of interest in karaoke and it is being held on a Saturday which is quite a busy night," said Mr Harflett.

The karaoke will be £2 a song and a collection box will also be going around the pub.

Mr Harflett said three members of staff were also planning to hold a sponsored head shave in the future.

Marj Smith, Kieran's grandmother, is also helping out and running a garage sale on April 10 from 10am at 268 Oxford Road.

A sponsored walk to Swindon is also in the pipeline, once a safe route and date are decided.

Miss Smith said the family would never give up hope that one day Kieran will be able to walk. But she admitted it was unlikely he will ever be able to climb stairs on his own.

Kieran was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when he was 11 months old.

The family became increasingly concerned when he wasn't trying to stand up like other children of his age, and wasn't making any attempt to try to pull himself up.

Miss Smith said she would love to hear from anyone who would like to help out in any way. She can be contacted on (01249) 814297.
