BOYS and girls from seven under-12 rugby teams enjoyed the pinnacle of their season when they competed in the Wiltshire Cup on Sunday.

The event was hosted by Devizes Rugby Club and featured seven teams from across the county.

Trowbridge pulled out on the day but there was still plenty of quality rugby on show.

Home side Devizes were put in the same group as Corsham, Wootton Bassett and Salisbury. In the other first round group Chippenham, Marlborough and Swindon went head to head.

After the group stage the top two teams in each pool qualified for the sem-finals and Devizes, Corsham and Swindon were unfortunately eliminated from the tournament.

In the semi-finals Chippenham took on Wootton Bassett and Salisbury were pair with Marlborough.

In the first semi-final it was Chippenham who booked their final place with a 15-10 victory.

The match had proved an aggressive encounter between but was a well-fought and fair contest.

In the end Chippenham just edged it with their tries coming from Louis Blackburn, Olivia Johnson and Kalum House.

It was Salisbury who Chippenham were to face in the final after Marlborough were beaten in the second semi-final. It was Chippenham's first Wiltshire Cup final and the players were up for the clash.

They put in a good performance which on another day could have been enough to have earned them the trophy. But luck deserted them and a couple of missed tackles saw Salisbury take their chances to score the opening try. Chippenham did not seem to be able to recover from this score and went on to concede another two tries to give Salisbury a 15-0 and the coveted trophy.

The tournament was organised by the chairman of Devizes RFC's junior section Jim Lloyd. Devizes coach Rod Brown also helped oversee the competition and refereed on the day as well. He said he had been impressed with the rugby skills of players from all the clubs involved. "It was a cracking tournament which was played in good spirits all round.

"It was a very good day and I have to say Salisbury were worthy winners. They had a couple of very good girls in their team who are apparently looking to go to trials with Richmond and England."

Brown said his own side's downfall had been contributed to by a number of key players dropping out.

"It wasn't just a few players we were missing six of our very best players were away," he added.

"It was disappointing because this is the tournament we gear up for all season and we had done well this year only losing two games. But on the positive side it gave all the other members of the team a chance to perform and they all did well."

The under-12s teams are now preparing for another tournament in Warminster on Sunday before the curtain comes down on their season.
