TWO Trowbridge mums are using Real Nappy Week to urge fellow parents to ditch disposable nappies and save money.

Alex Purcell and Marilyn Adams, from Paxcroft Mead estate, set up their own internet company, Nappyness, selling washable nappies, in November.

This week nappy campaigners are staging promotional events around the country and the Trowbridge business partners took their crusade to the town's park. The mums posed with a series of waste-filled bin liners to represent the amount of waste disposable nappies cause for one baby in a year.

Mrs Purcell, 34, said: "The point we are trying to make is that washable nappies are a real alternative. The only difference is that you put them in the washing machine rather than in the bin. Each pound spent on disposable nappies costs the tax payer between four and 10p to dispose of."

The pair say their nappies are a far cry from the 'leaky' towels many parents will be familiar with. They calculate that using washable nappies can lead to a saving of up to £500 for the first baby, while they can still be used for subsequent children.

The mums were introduced to washable nappies by a friend and say the idea for the business snowballed from there.

Mrs Purcell said: "We are very happy for people to come and see the products and we do personal consultations. We have also been in touch with maternity units."
