WARMINSTER is to get extra police on the streets after councillors agreed to fund more community safety officers.
The town council gave its full backing for the police to bid for an extra officer during a meeting on Monday night.
Warminster is now set to have two community support officers after the Government agreed to match any local funding.
Town and district councillor Chris March said: "Warminster was ahead of the game when we introduced CCTV cameras and I believe the police are blazing a trail in community support once again."
The move will see the police bid £9,000 of council cash for one officer with the Government providing a second.
If the bid is repeated across the region it could see eight police community safety officers appointed in west Wiltshire.
Inspector Geoff Miles, of Warminster Police, said: "It is almost a case of buy one get one free and we shall be looked upon as pioneers of this project."
All bids must be made by Monday and the officers should be on the streets by the school summer holidays.
