FloraIF the theory of women living longer than men is to be believed, two women from Trowbridge have shown they are living proof with both celebrating their 100th birthday this week.

Edith Fryer celebrated her 100th birthday on Wednesday with a lunch party at the Black Horse pub and was sent a telegram from the Queen.

Her son Ken, who lives with her in Trowbridge, said: "She will be over the moon with the telegram. I'm delighted she's made it to 100 and she's a very determined lady."

She has one granddaughter, and two great-grandchildren who live in Southampton.

She joins the Maple Grove day group for lunches and days out.

Flora Marshman celebrated her 100th birthday on Thursday with a party at Ravenscroft Nursing Home.

Mrs Marshman, who has a sister in her 90s, and has two children, has been a widow for about 30 years.

She lived in West Ashton until she moved to Ravenscroft 10 years ago.

Her granddaughter, Julia Bigwood, said: "We had most of the family there for her party and it was a lovely day.

"She's always been such a healthy person and used to walk into Trowbridge from West Ashton which kept her fit. Until she moved into a home I don't think she ever had to see a doctor at all."

Mrs Marshman has three grandchildren, seven great-grand children and one three-year-old great-great-grandson.
