MARK Godley is making no rash promises after confirming his return to football with Screwfix Direct Western League Premier Division Devizes Town.

Godley will take over the Nursteed Road reins in the summer, bringing Wiltshire football stalwart John Freegard in as his assistant.

Sean Moffatt, who took over from departed player-boss Dave Hopkins last month, will see out the fourth-from-bottom side's fixtures this season, with Kev Whitbread assisting, before Godley takes command.

Freegard will complete his playing commitments with Melksham Town this term before linking up with the ex-Corsham chief.

But after a couple of seasons of turmoil at the club, Godley a player for 10 years at Devizes in the 1980s and 1990s is not about to start making wild predictions about the future.

"I'm looking forward to getting going, and starting in the summer gives me the chance to look at players and see where we need to go,'' he said.

"I'm not about to start making promises though.

"The club is in far better shape than it was 12 months ago, but they have had a tough couple of years.

"John and myself will just focus on the football side of things.

"They are coming out of a tough patch, but there is potential, although the beginning is about consolidation.''

Godley quit Screwfix Division One Corsham in September 2002, citing increased work pressures and the need to spend more time with his family.

But he is back, refreshed and hoping to lift Devizes' fortunes.

"It's an exciting challenge. I enjoyed my time here as a player and it's great to be managing one of the two Premier Division clubs in the area.''

Devizes are without a game tomorrow, but Melksham travel to Birdport in the Premier Division.

In Division One, Godley's former club Corsham host Clevedon United tonight (7.30pm). Calne host Larkhall tomorrow.
