AN author commissioned to write a booklet about the role of Down Ampney airfield has had a good response in his request for memories of the area in wartime.
Geoff Simpson, 57, who lives in Cheshire, has been commissioned by the Co-Operative Group, which owns the Down Ampney agricultural Estate near Cricklade, where the remains of the historic airfield lie.
Geoff said: "I have had some interesting letters and tales sent to me from people in the area and many of them make a mention of the famous trombone player and comedian Jimmy Edwards who served at the base.
"Everyone seems to have a story about him."
Geoff is keen to hear of any more stories and memories people may have of the airfield.
Down Ampney played a key role in moving troops around for D-Day and during Operation Market Garden the infamous attempt to capture bridges across the Rhine in Holland.
This year is that operation's 60th anniversary.
