WELL done to those readers who spotted our April Fool gag about the Magic Round-about yesterday.
There are in fact no plans to get the roundabout listed as a World Heritage Site.
Our thanks go to Swindon's mayor Derek Benfield for playing along with the story.
There is no organisation called the National Society for the Preservation of Highway Heritage.
The organisation's fictitious chairman Alan Franklin-Day (AFD April Fools Day) was the clue to the joke.
There are, however, plans to get World Heritage status for the Great Western Railway between London and Bristol, including Swindon's Railway Village and the rail works. The plans are being put to UNESCO by English Heritage and the University of Bath.
So far, only two other railway lines have been granted the status from nearly 800 sites worldwide.
The GWR is one of the oldest lines in the country and one of the most complete, and is packed with history.
Bizarre though it may seem, the story accompanying the joke about Swindon's roundabouts being featured in a book to be published in the autumn was genuine.
Eagle-eyed readers may have spotted a gorilla monkeying around Swindon yesterday.
The hairy beast was seen on a quad bike in Lydiard Millicent, Westlea, Groundwell Road, Westcott Place, Commercial Road, Old Town and the Magic Roundabout.
The big monkey was motorbike stunt rider Andy Hobbs, 37, astride a Bombadier DS650 quad bike, having been sponsored £100 by North Wilts AMCA Motocross Club.
The money will go to the Swindon Cancer Appeal, which aims to raise £600,000 to provide to Macmillan nurses and a consultant in palliative care.
Father of four Andy, who did all the motorbike stunts in the recently-released children's film Tooth, said: "It seemed like a fun idea and, let's face it, something that could only be done on this particular day of the year."
