WOOTTON BASSETT are not out of the relegation woods after a 2-0 Hellenic League derby defeat at Highworth.

A goal in each half from Adam Giles the first a header and the second from six yards handed the hosts the points at the Elms.

The defeat leaves Bassett on the periphery of the bottom four, while Highworth climb a place to eighth.

Purton's Cherry Red Records Cup hopes were ended despite a 1-1 semi-final draw at home to Premier Division Bishops Cleeve.

Toby Clark scored for Purton from the penalty spot but the Swindon side trailed 4-0 from the first leg and went down 5-1 on aggregate.

In-form Malmesbury Vics secured another Division One West win, 3-1 at home to Harrow Hill.

Dale Townsend's penalty and goals from Stuart Greatwood and Andy Harris secured a second win in three days for Graham Learmonth's men.

Purton took a giant stride towards the Division One West title on Saturday after ending the unbeaten away record of Witney along with any hope they had of catching Alan Clark's side.

Mitch Wyatt's strike from Michael O'Sullivan's cross five minutes before the break was enough to hand Purton victory at the Red House and keep the hosts eight points clear at the top of the table with four games left to play.

Manager Alan Clark thinks his charges are peaking at the perfect moment.

He said: "I think people were expecting us to drop points in our last few games but we're hitting form at the right time and we've won the last two games fairly comfortably.

"We now need seven points from four games to win the title."

Shrivenham stay 10 points behind Purton with a game in hand after a 3-1 win at Quarry Nomads.

Doug Imrie and Tate Hulbert put Alan Dyton's troops two up before the hosts pulled one back prior to half-time.

Michael Silvanus' last-minute free-kick settled Shrivenham nerves.

Said Dyton: "A very poor surface contributed to two underachieving sides and a performance I would like to forget.

"Having said that, we created and missed a host of chances which we cannot continue to do as goalkeeper Chris Webb saved us with an excellent stop five minutes from time which would have made the score 2-2."

Elsewhere in Division One, Malmesbury Vics avenged last week's defeat to Cirencester United by winning 3-0 in the reverse fixture at the Corinium Stadium.

Dale Townsend fired the Vics ahead from the spot after Andy Mitchell was brought down in the box. A deflected Mitchell header made it 2-0 and Townsend diverted Andy Harris' cross-shot to complete the scoring before the interval.

Highworth have one foot in the final of the Supplementary Cup after winning the first leg of their semi at Milton United 3-2.

In a see-saw battle, Matt Jack fired Highworth ahead only for Pete Cullen to restore parity from the spot in first-half stoppage time.

Paul Cooper restored the Swindon side's lead but Gary Hartley gave Milton another lifeline. Ian McSherry had the final word, netting the winner with five minutes remaining.

Wootton Bassett's fine run of form in the Premier Division came to an abrupt end at Fairford as Pete Yeardley's team were beaten 4-0 at Cinder Lane.

Neil Matthews opened the scoring on 28 minutes when his header from a Ryan Lovegrove corner was judged to have crossed the line despite Paul Patel's attempts to clear.

Phil Corcoran doubled the lead 15 seconds into the second period, blasting past Ian Gill from the edge of the box.

Chris Hughes hit the third after Gill had parried a Corcoran effort and Sam Reason completed the scoring against his former club.
