DEVIZES town councillors have welcomed plans to put a pedestrian crossing in London Road close to the new Lidl supermarket.

The county council highways department last week published plans for the push-button signal-controlled Pelican crossing between the Horton Road and Hambleton Avenue roundabouts.

Coun Ray Taylor said: "It is good for health and safety in the area and it might encourage more people to use buses."

The new crossing is part of the planning agreement concluded between the county council and Lidl.

But councillors were concerned about the new 78-space car park planned at the police headquarters in London Road, and its impact on traffic congestion.

Police said the park was needed during the changeover of shifts.
