TOWN councillors in Marlborough are planning to spend up to £7,000 on

illuminating the exterior of the Town Hall. On Monday members of the finance and general purposes committee agreed to go ahead with the lighting scheme.

Architect Malcolm Ward had suggested a scheme of subtle lighting that would cost about £7,000.

There was an urgency, Mr Ward told councillors, that if they wanted the lighting to proceed it would be easier to install the cabling, at a cost of about £2,500, while the scaffolding is still in place for the major refurbishment.

Councillors are to explore a suggestion from finance chairman David Parker that local companies could be asked to sponsor part of the lighting cost in return for having their names published in a list.

The decision still has to be ratified by the full council.
