A councillor is calling for zero-tolerance for businesses that clutter up Wootton Bassett High Street with advertisement boards.
The tough stance is being taken by town councillor John Allen who is urging firms to behave responsibly.
"I say enough is enough. The boards are destroying the character of our market town," he said.
He says as well as being an eyesore, the display boards on pavements are so numerous that they pose a hazard to pedestrians especially those whose sight is impaired, and those who use wheelchairs and prams.
The town council received a letter in February from Wiltshire County Council, which is responsible for roads, stating it would take action soon, but Coun Allen says nothing has been done.
Now he is calling for it to take action against traders who leave boards out when the business is shut or display them away from the premises.
"It has almost been a year since the town council has asked for something to be done," he said.
As well as causing an obstruction, he says the boards are liable to be blown down by the wind, which could damage cars.
Bridgett Tubb, Wootton Bassett Chamber of Commerce's president, has also noticed an increase in the advertising boards but says that is because the town has not sorted out its parking problems.
She said: "If there was some kind of pay and display system or short- term parking available then people might be inclined to stop and see what the town has to offer.
"Business people have to work hard for a living and they have to attract customers."
Wiltshire County Council spokesman Adam Butcher said: "We understand the town council's concerns and have talked to them about the issue.
"The A-frame signs are illegal on the public highway and can make it very difficult for disabled people and parents with prams and pushchairs. We will be writing to all of the premises concerned shortly asking them to remove the signs.
"If the signs are not removed we have the power under Highway's Act to remove them and charge the owner for the cost of removal. We hope this will not be necessary."
The issue will be discussed at a town council meeting tonight at 7.30pm in the council chamber, Station Road, which the public are welcome to attend.
