CHIPPENHAM'S U14s entertained near neighbours Wootton Bassett on Easter Monday at Allington Field in a last minute fixture.
This enabled Wootton Bassett to round off their tour after their planned fixture had been called off.
Chippenham fielded a slightly weakened team as a result of players being away but they managed to just about overcome a committed and skilful Bassett team determined to overthrow the Wiltshire champions.
This was a game full of excellent running and handling from both teams, as well as a few seasonal gifts in the shape of missed tackles.
The match produced eight tries shared evenly between the two teams.
For Chippenham, centre Josh Brierley-Lyon, scrum half Dan East and fly half Callum Fannin scored touchdowns with full back Emory Garrett adding two conversions.
But as the game entered the last few minutes, Bassett scored their fourth try to lead 22-19.
Raising a final gallant effort, the Chippenham team were awarded a penalty in the visitors' 22 when the Bassett fly half strayed offside at a ruck.
The ball was moved wide from the penalty and flanker Andrew Bailey was in close support to plunge over for the winning score, so maintaining the squad's outstanding record of never having lost to another team from Wiltshire.
Afterwards, coach Jerry Field said: "The boys needed a good work-out before our Dorset and Wilts play-off final and we certainly got one today.
"We were missing some key players but credit to Bassett for the way they took the game to us.
"We can now plan for the Dorset & Wilts match in good heart knowing that even with a weakened team the boys have the spirit, commitment and ability to come back from behind and win.''
