WE know we must not always believe what we see reported in the press but tell me, have the mayor and the town
councillors only just come to the
conclusion that we need a bypass or a ring road, or both, in this town? Where have you been for the past five years?
There has been a pencilled-in bypass from the Hopton Barracks to Seend Fork for over 40 years.
I have always thought that it was the ongoing goal of every new council elected to have perused this project.
Now we are told something ought to be done because one of the councillors has counted the flow (or non-flow) of traffic in London Road and the town in general.
At the same time Kennet District Council is about to give approval for a school, granted to be moved from Bath Road, and virtually another 1,000 homes into the London Road area extra to the present situation! Can you imagine?
The councils have just missed a unique opportunity to have linked up the A342 from the roundabout at Wayside Farm, Nursteed around the huge expansion of building of Nursteed and Jump Farm to Hopton Barracks. That roadway could have been funded by the building contractors on the site concerned, and diverted a great deal of traffic from the town.
Unless councillors of both councils do something quickly this lovely town of ours is going to come to a standstill! It reminds me of a huge carbuncle waiting to burst in the centre of Wiltshire.
I wish you all well in your endeavours but please do something positive and quickly!
