AS a father of two football mad boys, a parent with children at Matravers School and a keen supporter of football in Westbury, I wish to support Tony McDonald and his fears for the future of sport in the town.
I am at a complete loss to understand why the district council should want to stunt the growth and success of the youth teams in Westbury and stop the upgrade of the sports fields at Matravers School.
By their revisions of the town's policy limits and the inclusion of policy H1 in the new district plan, this is surely what will happen. How can a council, which is severely short of sports grounds, justify these actions?
In this country there are 43,000 youth football teams but only 1,000 of them are allowed to have Standard Chartered status.
Last year Westbury Youth Football Club achieved this award, a magnificent recognition of the excellent work Tony McDonald and Peter Smart, among many others, are doing for over 300 young people in our town.
If policy H1 and the new restrictive policy limits for the town are voted into being on April 21 the future growth of the club will be curtailed and its very existence threatened.
Can one of our councillors for Westbury please explain to me, and many other parents like myself, why this is so?
I look forward to reading your letters column in the very near future, when perhaps I'll get an answer. However, I think it unwise to hold my breath!
P SEVIOUR,
Westbury
