I WRITE in reply to Andrew Otto's response to my letter regarding tailgaters.
I too drive with safety (not civil liberties) as my number one concern, both for my passengers and me, and for all other road-users.
While I very much appreciate Mr Otto's shared concern regarding the practice of tailgating, and his suggestions as to how to 'escape' such drivers, I am not sure I share his optimism.
Slowing down a little and then resuming driving at the speed limit may deter 'the thoughtless' but I am always nervous about antagonising 'the aggressive' by such tactics. Still, point taken I will persevere with the strategy with caution!
As to pulling over, I have often used this option. But it is difficult to do so on, say, the Westbury to West Lavington B3098, where I am already busy enough avoiding the ruts and potholes and on-coming pantechnicons.
Having to convince a tailgater that I feel safe driving at 38mph and no faster at certain points is no easy task, and there are precious few pull-off places along that route. A common problem throughout rural Wiltshire.
However, it is always good to have feedback and an ally.
And an added bonus; I have not been tailgated by anyone for the last two weeks.
Good news indeed if all Wiltshire drivers have taken the hint on account of being thoughtful Wiltshire Times readers!
J SIMKINS,
Westbury
