A SHORTLIST of sites for the potential relocation of one of Trowbridge's three secondary schools will be drawn up over the next few weeks.

West Wiltshire District Council has been asked to look at sites to the east of Trowbridge to solve looming travel problems.

The John of Gaunt School is emerging as the favourite to switch to any new purpose-built premises, but a consultation process will gauge the opinions of teachers, parents, and governors.

Members of Wiltshire County Council's children, education and libraries panel sanctioned the search for a potential site.

County and district councillor Trevor Carbin said The John of Gaunt was the most likely school to be picked for a move, but warned time was running out to secure a site on Paxcroft Mead.

He said: "With the development in Paxcroft ongoing, the one potential site for a new school could be cut off before too long.

"The county and district council officers need to act quickly.

"Hopefully we can get this list drawn up fairly quickly and then we will know where we are in terms of funding for a new site.

"St Augustine's would appear to be ruled out so The John of Gaunt seems to be the favourite."

A move for any of the three schools hinges on the county council securing funds through the Government's Building Schools for the Future project.
