BARRY Coombs is stepping down as Trowbridge captain at the end of this season after deciding he wants to put all his focus on playing.

The 22-year-old has enjoyed a successful two seasons with the armband but he believes it is the right time to make a change.

Last season he led Trowbridge to promotion to the Southern Counties South league for the first time in their history and this season he helped them to a Dorset and Wilts Vase triumph over Swindon.

He said: "I have loved being captain here. It has been a tremendous honour to do it at such a young age but I just want to play now.

"I have had a few injuries this season and I want to concentrate on getting myself ready for next season and playing to my full potential.

"The club means everything to me but I just felt it was time for a change. A lot of thing will be going on in the summer to help move the club forward and I am sure this is the right move."

Coombs will captain his side in tomorrow's final league match at home to Dorchester before handing over the captaincy. A replacement has not yet been named.

Coombs said: "It was a very hard decision. I have been thinking about it over the second half of the season.

"It has been great and I will miss it. I think maybe the players have grown bored with having me shouting at them all the time, so it is time for a new man to do it.

"Having said that I would definitely hope to return as captain one day but that all depends on whether the club would want to give me it back. That is all in the future though."
