WOOTTON BASSETT took a giant step towards avoiding relegation from the Premier Division with a 2-1 win at fellow strugglers Almondsbury.
The victory sees the two clubs swap positions either side of the drop zone, and with only one or two of the four relegation slots likely to be enforced, Pete Yeardley and his team appear to be safe.
The Bassett manager is not counting his chickens though.
"It was a very good victory for us," said Yeardley.
"Apart from 20 minutes at the end we totally outplayed them.
"I don't think it's over yet," he added.
"All the teams around got results and Almondsbury have still got to play Pewsey.
"I think we need one more win."
Steve Bunting put Bassett on course after just two minutes when he thumped home a Paul Patel corner from 18 yards out.
Yeardley's side earned some breathing space five minutes after the restart when Swatton turned in another Patel corner.
Craig Davidge tapped in to reduce arrears on 73 minutes, but Bassett held firm to collect three crucial points.
Highworth's winter blues have continued into spring following a second defeat in three days.
John Fisher's troops were beaten 2-0 at Abingdon on the back of their 4-0 defeat at Bishops Cleeve on Thursday.
The loss sees Highworth fall to 10th, with Abingdon moving a place above them.
Fisher's men are in action again this evening when they host Milton United in the second leg of their Supplementary Cup semi-final tie.
Highworth lead 3-2 from the first match.
There's no change at the top of Division One West as the top three all won.
But with games running out, it will take something special to stop Purton, who continue to lead the way by five points.
Alan Clark's side cruised to a 6-0 victory at struggling Harrow Hill.
Mitch Wyatt opened the scoring from the edge of the box, and Steve Avenell headed the second just before the interval.
Kenny Hughes made it 3-0 from the spot before Alan Webb volleyed number four from a Toby Clark free-kick.
Webb then hit his second before Tom Dingle completed the scoring with a late sixth.
Purton now need five points to secure the title ahead of their home clash with Old Woodstock on Tuesday, and the visit of Quarry Nomads on Saturday.
Second-placed Ross kept their hopes alive with a 2-1 win over Headington Amateurs.
Alan Dyton's Shrivenham, in third, remain in the promotion hunt after a comfortable 4-0 win over Middle Barton.
The margin of victory should have been greater as Dyton's men hit the woodwork three times in the first half and Tate Hulbert missed a penalty.
But Shrivenham found their shooting boots after the break with Alex Green, Michael Silvanus, Liam Thompson and Steve Winchcombe all netting.
Said Dyton: "Once we scored the first goal it was a matter of how many we would score.
"The second promotion spot is very much a possibility if we can continue to turn in the performances we have produced over the last couple of weeks."
Malmesbury continued their fine form with another win to pull them further away from the bottom four.
Andy Mitchell scored the only goal against Old Woodstock two minutes before half-time.
Cirencester United were beaten 3-1 at Witney.
