Redworth House has become home to house martins.HOUSE Martins have caused a song-and-dance in Amesbury by nesting in the roof of Redworth House - which is soon to be demolished.
The property was vacated earlier this month to make way for a new Co-op supermarket, but now that the feathered friends have set up home, demolition of the site has been halted.
The building had been shared by the Citizens' Advice Bureau, Wiltshire county council and Salisbury district council, before the food giant expressed an interest in acquiring the site.
Now the building will be left alone while the popular birds nest under the eaves until the summer.
A spokeswoman for RSPB south-west region said: "It is usual for house martins to have this relationship with houses in the countryside and they don't do any damage at all.
"They are fantastic birds and part of our heritage and it is illegal to destroy or damage their nests.
"I hope when the site is built on, they can accommodate the house martins as well."
A spokesperson for Salisbury district council said vacant possession of Redworth House would take place within the next couple of weeks
"Completion of the sale cannot be finalised until the Co-op has a building contract in place and they have up to four months to do this once the place is vacant."
