ANOTHER rock solid performance from Downton secured their Sydenhams Wessex League Division One status with one game still to play, writes Ryan Lovejoy.
The Robins' 2-0 victory at Moneyfields, coupled with defeats for relegation rivals Blackfield & Langley and Whitchurch United, who lost 2-1 to Brockenhurst and 5-2 to Thatcham Town respectively, ensured Mitch Blake's side beat the drop.
Andy McGlashan scored his first goal for the club with a far post header from Brian White's corner on the hour, while Kev Pelling made it 2-0 ten minutes later.
The left back passed the ball to Neal Archer who crossed for Mark Savage to nod back to Pelling, who finished well.
Assistant boss Steve Adlam, covering for Blake who was away in Portugal, said: "Moneyfields are a physical team and they can bully you around.
"They forced Jon Burton into three good saves before we scored.
"I was pleased for Andy McGlashan because his attitude and enthusiasm have been spot on since he joined us on loan from Salisbury City.
"We played well as a unit and were extremely focused, which helped us keep our third clean sheet in a row."
Downton complete their campaign at BAT Sports on Saturday, looking for a repeat of their 1-0 victory at Wick Lane earlier this month.
Adlam added: "It's a big thing for us to stay in the Wessex League. If we win on Saturday, that would make it four in a row and that hasn't happened since Mitch and myself started running the team."
Despite his absence, Blake's thoughts were never far from the crucial game.
"He must have been on the phone five times in the second half," explained Adlam.
"He only wanted good news. Luckily I was able to do that twice, but I think he thought they had equalised when we made it 2-0. He said he was more nervous being in Portugal than he is on the touchline."
Rob Trim returns from suspension on Saturday, but Downton will be without Pelling.
