CAROLYN Arkell has announced that she will not be standing for re-election as Highworth's borough councillor.
Coun Arkell (Con, High-worth) has given up local politics to help support her husband brewery boss James Arkell in his new role as Wiltshire's High Sheriff.
Coun Arkell, 49, who has served on Swindon Council for six years, said: "James' role requires a lot of support from me as he will be attending functions all across Wiltshire.
"I couldn't ask the people of Highworth to vote for me when I don't think I would have the time to do anything for the town.
"Being a councillor is a great job, and I have learned so much.
"James' role lasts for a year, and after that I will think about returning to politics, but at this stage I would say that would be unlikely."
As well as ceremonial commitments, Mr Arkell, managing director of Arkell's Brewery, will be overseeing various crime-busting initiatives.
Coun Arkell served as lead member for social services between October 2002 and May last year, and is a member of the council's fostering and adoption panel.
She is also one of the authority's Children's Champions, who oversee the welfare of children in care, and represents the council on Wiltshire Police Authority.
She will stand down at the local elections due in June.
