OLD TOWN is to play host to a concert by the City of London Sinfonia Orchestra during the summer.

The event has been organised by Swindon Borough Council and Swindon Artscape, along with electricity provider npower.

It will take place on Saturday, July 3, in the Bowl, in the Town Gardens as part of the Old Town Festival.

The event will be the main highlight of the festival and will feature popular classics from Rossini, Strauss and Tchaikovsky.

It will be followed by a Last Night of the Proms performance with Rule Britannia, Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance accompanied by a fireworks finale.

The concert is one of the highlights of a new scheme between npower and the council with the aim to support and develop Swindon's cultural life and strengthen links with local business.

Mike Bowden, executive director of RWE Innogy, the parent company of npower said: "We are delighted to be named by Swindon Borough Council as its creative partner for such events.

"We are committed to the support of local as well as national initiatives and believe that the involvement of companies such as ourselves with local communities is a fundamental element of corporate responsibility."

The City of London Sinfonia Orchestra performs more than 80 concerts a year as well as touring abroad.

The event will feature Romanian conductor Nicolae Moldoveanu and soprano singer Rebecca Sharp. Brian Mattock, vice-chairman of the Old Town Festival said: "The programme promises to be of the highest calibre and is a fantastic attraction for Swindon and Old Town in particular."

Toby Rathbone, Performing Arts Officer for Swindon Council said: "This is a huge coup for the town. The orchestra is one of the finest in the country.

"I am sure it will be a fantastic evening of entertainment for everyone. The Bowl is a great venue brilliant for families and I think we will get a real cross-section of people coming along."

This year's Old Town Festival will be a 13-day long extravaganza from June 22 to July 4.

A range of events is being staged to celebrate the history and culture of Old Town as well as mark a numerous range of anniversaries including the centenary of Thamesdown Transport, the 40th anniversary of the Swindon Art Gallery and the 150th anniversary of the Evening Advertiser.

Concert advance ticket prices are £15 for adults and £12.50 for concessions. A family ticket for two adults and two children is priced £48.
