Ref: 12832/2THE Reverend Neill Archer was installed as the new vicar of Malmesbury Abbey on Tuesday night.
Lord Lieutenant Sir Maurice Johnston, North Wiltshire MP James Gray and Mayor of Malmesbury Charles Vernon were part of the congregation as the former opera singer was welcomed to the diocese by Bishop of Bristol, Mike Hill.
The parish, which includes Brokenborough Church, has been without a vicar since the Rev David Littlefair retired in June last year, after nine years.
Mr Archer, 42, said: "I do not think it could have gone any better. I really am thrilled; it is an exciting time for my family and me. Malmesbury really feels like home."
The abbey was full for the special service as hymns and prayers celebrated Mr Archer's arrival and gave him God's blessings for the future.
He said: "The Bishop of Bristol spoke very movingly, urging the church to go forward. I made a commitment to the ministry of the Malmesbury area and thanked everyone for their support."
Mr Archer was used to singing at the world's top opera houses before he decided on a life of the cloth in 1999.
He has been a curate in Derbyshire and an associate vicar in New South Wales, Australia.
He is joined at the vicarage by his Australian wife Marilyn and three children Sally, 14, Rosie, 11, and Grace, eight.
He said his first job would be to become familiar with Malmesbury.
