CHIPPENHAM kept their hands firmly on the Dorset & Wilts Vase with a comprehensive victory over Wimborne at North Dorset RFC on Sunday.
This win gave Chippenham a third consecutive win another unique achievement for the players and the club.
Playing with the slope, Chippenham put pressure on Wimborne and after an infringement at the tackle, fly-half Gareth Wiltshire bagged the first points with a 30m penalty in front of the posts.
From the kickoff Chippenham regained possession and pressed forward again. Another penalty awarded to Chippenham, this time 40 metres out, was tapped quickly by number eight Dan Shuker who drew the defence and with great timing, scrum-half Danny Burke took and gave the ball in one movement to feed Wiltshire.
Wiltshire came through on a great line and out sprinted the covering Wimborne players to scoreunder the posts, which he duly converted.
Wimborne came back into the game after a couple of missed tackles by Chippenham and after a spell of pressure on the Chippenham line, they squeezed over in the corner for an unconverted try.
Chippenham came back at Wimborne and after some excellent phase play by the forwards, good passing put winger Peter Rigby over in the corner.
Wimborne came back again and had a five minute spell in the Chippenham 22. But some well drilled and patient defence thwarted their efforts and they were only able to came away with a penalty.
In the last minutes of the first half, Wimborne gave away another penalty on the half-way line which Chippenham drilled into the corner. From the lineout, another good catch and drive drill saw the forwards push Wimborne over the line with loose head, Simon Drage coming up with the score to give Chippenham a 20-8 lead at half-time.
After the restart, Wimborne came hard at Chippenham and put them under a lot of pressure but stout defending and handling mistakes stopped them getting over the line.
Chippenham cleared their line well, time after time and when Wimborne gave Chippenham a hint of a gap, they took their chance to take possession out of the danger zone.
Wiltshire grabbed his second try of the afternoon with another great line under the posts which he also converted.
Wimborne continually came back at Chippenham and pressurised them under their posts. They drove over the line but were held up and a counter-drive from Chippenham pushed them out to the five metre line.
Chippenham gave away a penalty but Wimborne knocked the ball forward from the tap penalty and Chippenham cleared their line once more.
With just five mintues to go Chippenham finished in great style. From a scrum in their 22, Dan Shuker picked up and drove up the blind side. The links and running lines of the backs and back row took Chippenham up the field.
Possession of the ball was controlled and fast and Peter Rigby finished off the move, touching down under the posts. Wiltshire added the conversion for a personal total of 19 points for the match.
