HERE we go again, when any talk about a Devizes bypass comes up we hear of that idea of a tunnel from Cannings Hill to the bottom of Caen Hill (Gazette letters, April 15).
Does this writer realise that the cost of a tunnel would be far greater than the cost of an overland route? There is plenty of land for the route to go via somewhere near the village of Roundway. I hear the people of Roundway saying: "not near us".
As an ex-truck driver who for many years had to pass through my home town I speak for many drivers who would not be happy to climb through a long tunnel from Caen Hill to Cannings Hill. Think of the danger. An overland route would be welcomed by them. They do not like all the hold-ups that they have to endure through Devizes.
So let's not hear any more of the tunnel and get on with the only sensible thing and shout for a bypass, as sadly to make progress we have to take a little bit of the countryside.
