THE company behind retirement homes in Melksham and Trowbridge has won a national housebuilding award for the second year running.

McCarthy and Stone was named best national builder at the 2004 British Housebuilder Awards.

The company is responsible for homes at Giffords Court at Lowbourne, Melksham and Regal Court at Bythesea Road, Trowbridge.

Chairman Keith Lovelock said: "While we are enormously proud of wining this premium award twice, the formula is relatively simple we devote an unusually large resources to customer care and quality control.

McCarthy and Stone also won the Gold Award as best large builder and a total of 22 certificates, the maximum possible in each category, for service and quality.

The awards are judged by home-buyers and the 26-year-old company has notched up gold prizes for the last six years.

The company's apartments are designed for people over 60 seeking a more manageable and secure property in their retirement without losing their independence.

The awards were a sequel to two different surveys earlier in the year when McCarthy and Stone was named as Britain's most reliable builder.
