Ref. 30088-9HUNDREDS looked on in amazement as more than 50 people defied their instincts and walked barefoot over hot coals.

At least 500 people turned up at the GWR FM Firewalk for Age Concern Swindon and the radio station's own charitable trust, which raises money for local charities.

The crowds enjoyed street entertainment and music while those taking part in the firewalk were taught basic mental preparation, including physical and mental techniques to enable them to overcome their fear.

Then at 9pm on Friday, the 54 firewalkers took to the street outside the Town Hall in Swindon town centre, and with the support of a screaming crowd, began their walk or jog across the smoking hot coals.

Phineas Parker, 29, who was part of Nationwide's team of firewalkers, said: "It was quite warm, and seemed to twinkle your feet but it was an amazing experience."

His feelings were shared by Martin Neighbour who, with the five-strong Stratton Strollers team, raised £1,100.

Mr Neighbour, 34, said: "It felt great, but started to get hotter and hotter as you reached the end of the coals. I am just relieved it was all over. I am not sure whether I would do it again."

Overall the event raised around £11,000.

Jackie Kent, who runs the GWR trust, said: "We are over the moon. It was a fantastic event. Four months ago when we were planning this we were not sure if we could make a firewalk work.

"The good weather and the fact that it was St Georges's day really brought everyone out and I want to thank everyone who took part."

Barry Lingard, chief executive of the Swindon Initiative, also took part and managed to raise the most for a single firewalker £1,100.

He said there were a few eyebrows raised when he told people he was going to take part but said: "It was an experience I shall never forget."
