ANDY KING wants to add five fresh faces to his squad ahead of the 2004-5 campaign.

The Town boss met all of his out-of-contract players yesterday for initial discussions about their respective futures.

King will also meet with his board of directors later this week to discover his transfer/wage budget for next season.

He said: "I know who I want to keep and who I don't.

"Sometimes you don't have a choice. There may be players who are contracted that I don't want to keep.

"There may also be players who are out of contract that don't want to stay. I don't know as yet.

"In my mind I have a picture of what I need for next season.

"There is room here for five new players.

"Whether I can afford it or have it, remains to be seen.

"The board of directors have to tell me what their ambitions are for next year.

"If we go up, then I'm hoping there will be ambition shown.

"The good thing for me is that I believe I have proved to them that I can bring players in. I don't think they're worried about me spending their money.

"If my budget doesn't allow me to pay wages to players of a better calibre, that's when it becomes more difficult."

King wants to bring in new faces over the summer but doesn't envisage a close season of frantic activity.

He said: "If we remain where we are (in Division Two) I don't see a lot of change and we'll be working roughly on the lines that we were this seaason.

"Those who leave would free up funds to bring others in.

"If you finish fourth, there are things to be tampered with.

"I don't think I'm a million miles away as we are now, but I would still like to bring in five players.

"I have targeted five players, five positions. There are certain players we haven't got that I would like and certain types of players that we haven't got that I would like.

"Also, there are certain positions that need cover and other positions where people need to be challenged.

"We have moved on a great deal in the last 12 months and its changed beyond all recognition in the last two years."

Despite looking ahead, King remains hopeful that the current campaign will end on a high note.

A result at Queens Park Rangers on Saturday would confirm Town's play-off spot.

King said: "I believe this team is that good on its day that it is capable of winning the play-offs."

Skipper Matt Hewlett sat out training yesterday but a sore knee is not expected to hamper his chances of making the Queens Park Rangers clash.

Sammy Igoe's back continues to improve and although defender Matt Heywood hobbled out of training yesterday, after receiving a kick on the ankle, he too should be fit to make the trip to Loftus Road.
