A COLOURFUL parade re-enacting the story of St George and the dragon took place for the first time in Durrington on Sunday.

The parade was organised by the Salisbury Plain District Scout group and was held in glorious weather, which brought out a crowd of nearly 300.

The parade was led by James Cash, as St George, and Rio McQueen, as the king's daughter, with a magnificent dragon made by the 2nd Bulford Beaver Colony.

The parade formed at the village recreation ground, before heading for the parish church for a special St George's Day service, led by the Reverend Rachel Bussey.

More than 250 young people, leaders and adults from seven Scout groups, one Brownie pack and one Guide troop, all from the Salisbury Plain district, watched as the young people performed the story of St George's Day parade in Durrington.St George slaying the dragon and rescuing the maiden.

Among those who watched the parade was Don Evans, who has been a member of the Scout movement for more than 50 years and who said it was the first time he could recall it ever being held in Durrington.

Leader in charge of the 2nd Bulford (St Leonard's) Scout group, Jon Lewis, said it was an enjoyable day for everyone concerned.
