Parish councillors are to tell a villager who would like a Millennium clock illuminated at night that the council cannot afford it.
But they are to investigate the possibilities of finding a sponsor.
The clock, which has three faces, was erected by the parish council on the bus shelter in Pewsey.
However, councillors say they cannot afford the estimated £450 to illuminate the clock's faces one of which is currently telling the wrong time.
Discussing the request at a meeting last Tuesday, chairman Alec Carder said: "We have looked at this but decided it would be too expensive."
Coun Colin Lampard suggested a reply should be sent to the correspondent asking if they might know a sponsor.
Coun Myles York said: "Perhaps one of our local business might like to sponsor the cost."
Anyone interested in contributing towards the cost of having the clock illuminated is asked to contact parish clerk Lindsay Mason or her assistant Josie Sawyer at the parish council offices at the Bouverie Hall.
