CHIPPENHAM'S promotion hopes are on a knife edge and will rest on them getting a result against a Hinckley United side who will be all too keen to deny them that a vital three points.

The Bluebirds need a win on the final day of the season in Leicestershire and also need either Bath City or Dover Athletic to lose their last match of the campaign.

But Hinckley will be more fired up than usual as they bid to avenge their 2-1 defeat to Chippenham at Hardenhuish Park at the end of February.

A volatile encounter saw the Bluebirds fall behind to Leon Jackson's 29th minute opener. They levelled when Neil Cartwright put the ball past his own goalkeeper and grabbed the winner .three minutes from time through Charlie Griffin.

But the match was marred by ugly scenes in the dying seconds. Hinckley defender Andy Penney was sent off after being involved in a 22-man melee that blew up after a late challenge on Chippenham's Gary Horgan.

Penney was also involved in an angry conforntation with a Chippenham steward as he left the field.

Last Saturday Hinckley moved to sixth in the table when they won 3-0 away to newly crowned league champions Crawley Town.

United escaped a couple of scares before Dave Sadler fired them into a 22nd minute lead after Gavin Stone's header was saved.

Hinckley extended their lead on 34 minutes when Stone crossed for Sadler to finish before the win was rounded off in the 63rd minute when Jamie Lenton netted a free-kick.

Much of Hinckley's creativity comes from former Republic of Ireland U21 midfielder John Burns.

Right-back Neil Cartwright, who graduated through the Coventry City youth set up, is also having an impressive season.

Hinckley also boosted their squad earlier this season with the club record £5,000 signing of Matt Lewis from Kidderminster Harriers.
