AT the beginning of 2003, things were looking bleak for the technology industry it was struggling through economic troubles and two years of declining IT investment.

During this time, Intel chief executive officer Craig Barrett, was firmly steering his company towards what he believed was the next big opportunity mobile computing.

Intel had a vision where communication and computing technology would converge and backed this up with massive investments despite the difficult economic climate.

Then, in March 2003, it launched Intel's answer for the truly mobile lifestyle: Intel Centrino mobile technology.

Designed from the ground up, Intel Centrino mobile technology was Intel's first integrated computing technology for wireless notebook PCs.

Three components work together to enable outstanding mobile performance, extended battery life and integrated wireless LAN capability in thinner and lighter notebooks.

The components include the Intel Pentium M processor, the Intel 855 Chipset Family and the Intel PRO/Wireless Network Connection.

Launched around the globe as the sun rose to a huge international fanfare of publicity, Intel described it as its "biggest product introduction since the Pentium processor 10 years ago".

Market analysts were equally optimistic: the Meta Group predicted that Intel Centrino mobile technology would rapidly gain traction in the corporate mobile market and account for 80 per cent of corporate notebook sales by the end of 2003, while Gartner advised enterprises to immediately start evaluating Intel Centrino mobile technology for mainstream use.
