Wiltshire and Swindon Safety Camera Partnership (WSSCP) are developing a web-based portal that will integrate with the partnerships Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP) system.
This new system will be the first of its kind in the UK and will enable the safety partnership to comply with the forthcoming Freedom of Information Act 2005.
The system will enable drivers to view evidence of their speeding offence online.
People will also have access to information and statistics about crashes and fatalities that have occurred on the roads where speed cameras are sited.
The portal will endeavour to address some of the high profile concerns the public has about speed enforcement. People will be able to log onto a website that will give them immediate access to evidence relating to an alleged speeding offence and information about the collisions in the local area which should help them understand why speed cameras have been placed in certain locations.
This new website will provide the public with a faster, more efficient process, which contains detailed information about the alleged offence. With the new system, when a motorist receives an NIP they will also receive a private PIN number that will give them access to their information online.
The online system not only reduces the administrative burden on staff at the partnership, but also ensures that it does not increase when the Freedom of Information Act comes into force.
The information provided on the website will change people's perceptions of speed cameras, they are there for the safety of all road users and not just to fine people.
Once motorists know the statistics and understand how many crashes occur on each road they might be more willing to slow down and create a safer driving environment.
