FOLLOWING the publicity given to meetings of the BNP and UKIP by the Gazette on April 22 I would like to

report that the Devizes Branch Labour Party members celebrated St George's Day at a well-attended social evening, held in the Bell by the Green.

Steve Foxcroft from Calne, the new chairman of the Constituency Party was present as were members of other branches.

In the run-up to the European elections members were urged to make a special effort to ensure that members and supporters get out and vote Labour. The aim is to get a second Labour MEP in the south west.

Whatever claims are made by the Lib Dems or negative campaigns

conducted by the BNP and Tories, Labour is undeniably second in the south west in terms of MP seats and Euro votes at the last election and is in a strong position to win a second seat this time round.

Based on the turnout at the last

European election Labour only needs to get at least another 287 extra votes per constituency to return a second MEP.

Only Labour will offer positive membership of an enlarged Europe while retaining the right to negotiate and develop independently where this is in the national interest.

Chairman of the Devizes Branch Labour Party
