GAZETTE & HERALD: PLANS to build a major new supermarket in the centre of Chippenham have fallen at the first hurdle after a retail survey impact assessment found the town could not support another supermarket.
North Wiltshire District Council undertook the study, working in partnership with Wiltshire County Council to consider options for the future of the Bath Road car park and Bridge Centre area of the town.
A spokesman for the county council, which owns the Bridge Centre, said: "The district council approached us to look into the development of the Bridge Centre and Bath Road car park and we are in talks about what can be done."
The survey found Chippenham did not need another major supermarket but the councils are still in discussion about the future regeneration of the site.
District councillor Ross Henning said: "We are in the very first stages of looking at a vision for Chippenham for the future. That area is possibly the next area to be revamped in some way but these are preliminary discussions."
