A FIGHT to save a listed building from developers has been unsuccessful after villagers failed to secure a deal with the county council.
Villagers from Dilton Marsh had hoped to buy the old junior school building from Wiltshire County Council by raising £100,000.
But the 19th century grade II listed building will now be sold on the open market after both parties failed to reach an agreement.
A pre-school which was using the old junior school will be moved out to a mobile classroom.
A spokesman for Wiltshire County Council, said: "The local community wanted to use the old school building for a hall but didn't come up with the money at the given deadline. It will now be sold on the open market.
"We have a duty to get the maximum value for assets we dispose of, if it is surplus to requirements we look to sell to realise proceeds."
Villagers had hoped to use the building as a community hall and may bid for the building again on the open market.
The old junior school was handed over to the council in return for land to build the primary school on 10 years ago.
Parish councillor Alison Irving said: "Fundraisers put the money up but we understand the council could not accept it due to financial requirements. It is a shame as we had plans for a community hall but it may be possible to buy the building on the open market."
