BRADFORD ON AVON hosted their first tournament at the new ground in Winsley at the weekend.

With the rugby club away on tour, this excellent new facility was given over to a large festival of girls' and boys' soccer, which attracted 80 teams.

Under sevens and eights followed the usual non-competitive format with all participating boys and girls gaining medals.

The under nines tournament was won by Castle Combe and the under 10s by Westbury.

Town mayor Cllr Vicky Landell-Mills made awards

On Sunday afternoon 14 teams from some of the local girls' clubs, not involved in the county finals at Chippenham, came along and took part in the under 12 and under 14 tournament.

New under 12s girls' teams from Westbury, Derry Hill and Trowbridge Town took part alongside more established sides from the county league.

The under 12 tournament was won 2-0 by Swindon Badger White with Bradford runners up.

Bradford won the under 14s tournament, beating Chippenham Town 3-0 in the final.

Cllr Minna Gillam, who has long supported youth sport in the town, presented trophies.

Over 50 girls from seven to 17 are now playing regular football at Bradford, with Team Bath seeing the potential of establishing a link with the club.

This link has already brought in top female coaches to train and play alongside the older west Wiltshire girls in friendlies against Swindon Town and Chippenham Ladies.

A west Wiltshire ladies' side serving Bradford, Melksham and Trowbridge now looks a probability for next season.

For those who want it, there could be an outlet to top class ladies football and midweek coaching at the university sports village, alongside premier league players.
