KINGS Arms have stepped up their bid to win promotion in their first season in the Vanitec Computers-sponsored Chippenham Sunday League.

They played their first game in four weeks and picked up the two points they needed to leapfrog Virgin Mobile and claim second spot.

Kings Arms defeated KSM 7-0 and now need one win from their final two games to claim a first season promotion behind winners FC Bradford.

Scott Askew's four goals took his tally for the season to 37 and Jerome Dyer, Pete Spong and Jamie Iles added the others.

Paul Cryer's 30-yard strike plus a penalty from Shahram Hematti was enough for Pack Horse Rangers to see off Rowde 2-0.

Old Road Tavern and North Star B battled out a nine-goal thriller in midweek that saw the Star avenge their early season 3-0 defeat as they gained a 5-4 success.

Kerry Upchurch tapped the Tavern in front only for Darren Axford to level for the Star. Another tap in for the Tavern, this time from Martin Woolford, restored their lead. Goals from Adam Godwin (2) and James Yates then swung the game the Star's way before Ashley Lawrence put through his own net to reduce the arrears. Simon Clifford regained North Star's two goal cushion and even through Simon Palmer pulled another back for the Tavern from the penalty spot, it was not enough as the Calne side held on for win number 11 of the season.

Knockout Cup

PREMIER Division champions Sherston Town completed the league and cup double in style when they saw off the challenge of Second Division underdogs North Star A in the final of the PPL Presto Print sponsored Eric Hughes Memorial Knockout Cup.

Having already clinched the Premier Division title they were looking to become the first side since 2000 to capture both when the then mighty Cooper-Avon Rangers achieved the feat.

Many people thought that all Sherston had to do was turn up to win the trophy, but North Star played their part in a final that was a credit to the league and both sides that were involved as they came from 3-0 down before losing out 4-2.

Played on Bradford Town's ground in front of over 200 people the match was one of the best staged by the league in the past few years.

North Star made the stronger start and took the game to Sherston from the off and in the opening 15 minutes had the largest share of the play, with Nick Fielding going close in the first minute and only a tremendous reflex save from Sherston keeper Stuart Pound kept out Victor Long's header on seven minutes.

North Star could not make their greater possession count and they fell behind in the 20th minute to a terrific free kick from Andy Wicks, whose piledriver from 20 yards gave keeper Star keeper Paul Warren no chance.

Sherston began to show their class and as half-time approached they doubled their lead through Allan Webb who sidefooted home Sherston's second from six yards in the 39th minute.

North Star fell further behind within a minute of the restart when confusion in their defence allowed Ed Wilkins to nip in and knock the ball home for number three.

There looked to be no way back for a shell shocked North Star but they battled their way back into the game and led by the influential Ronnie Kallmeier they caused Sherston no end of problems. But it took them until the 63rd minute to make the breakthrough they needed. This came when Ed Wilkins upended Rob Smith in the box and the penalty was scored by Pete Thornton.

As North Star threw everything forward looking for another goal Sherston's defence relied on the agility of keeper Pound who was called on to keep his team in the game with a stunning save that saw him at full stretch to tip Thornton's close range header over the bar.

Minutes later Sherston regained their three goal advantage when Dan Beck picked out Anthony Vizard with an excellent 30 yard pass. Vizard controlled the ball well before unleashing a lightning finish from 18 yards to make it 4-1 which should have killed off any further challenge from the Star.

Star raised their game again and with 10 minutes left substitute Mark Sharrett gave them hope when he headed home Kallmeier's cross.

On 85 minutes Kallmeier was denied a third for the Star by another fantastic stop from keeper Pound.

Charlie Rawlings, from Knockout Cup sponsors PPL Presto Print, presented the trophies. Player of the match award went to Stuart Pound.

Premier Division

GOALS from Nick Oram, Richard Holman and Stuart Beavan, who rifled home a 35 yard free kick, were not enough to prevent All Cannings A from losing their penultimate game of the season, 5-3 at home to Bradford News.

Russell Francis (2), John Burt (2) and Charlie Powell all found the target for the Newsmen who included Dave Allen in their starting line for his first match between the sticks for 10 years.

This weekend's final round of Premier Division fixtures will decide who will finish as runners-up behind champions Sherston Town.

Should Westbury Rangers A defeat Box Rovers they will hold onto second spot ahead of Dog and Fox Ashley but should Rangers fail to win and Dog and Fox Ashley beat All Cannings FC, Ian Pryer's team will take the silverware.

Division One

MAUD Heath Sports returned to winning ways after two consecutive draws saw them surrender any chance they had of stealing the title from Biddestone Social.

Their 2-0 win over Semington Rovers came with goals from Ali Duncan and Dean Slade.

Trowbridge Harriers continue to keep the heat on Maud Heath Sports as the sides battle it out for the runners-up spot.

Their 4-2 victory over West End Wanderers leaves them just two points behind Maud Heath, who have a far superior goal difference, and with two matches left each a nail biting finale looks on.

Trowbridge Harriers took the lead against the Wanderers when player-manager Paul Edwards fired home. A Tony Kelly free kick saw Wanderers level before Harriers ran away with the game with goals from Jamie Burbedge (2) and Andy Cooper, who had started the game in goal. Nathan Mantle replied for the Wanderers when he crashed home another excellent free kick.

Having secured the title last weekend, Biddestone Social's own tinker man John O'Meara rested a few of his star names for their game with Wingfield. This included leading scorer Matt Pratley who started on the bench, and although Pratley came on to equalise it wasn't enough as Wingfield claimed a 2-1 win. Mark Barnett's rich vain of form continued when he headed his team in front after 16 minutes. Pratley made it 1-1 in the 64th minute but Neil Wilcox won it for Wingfield two minutes from time when he drove home a 20 yard free kick.

Division Two

IT was 20 out of 20 for Corsham Centre as they at last gained promotion from Division Two.

Corsham's 8-2 defeat of a spirited 10 man Somerford side also sent their opponents back to Division Three.

Although Roadrunners were condemned to the drop many weeks ago, they produced one of their finest displays of the campaign as they came from 3-0 behind to silence Spencer Sports who were left clinging on at the end to take both points from a contest in which their opponents played with only 10 players.

Tom Evans gave Spencer the lead on 10 minutes. This was doubled by a great solo effort from Ben Grinham in the 20th minute and when substitute Paul Eames knocked home number three with only his second touch of the game a repeat of last week's

20-0 drubbing looked on again. However, Roadrunners dug deep and a Lee Kelty double gave them hope of picking up only their third point of the season but in the end they ended up losing out 3-2.

Tom Pang scored two of Holt's goals in their 5-0 win against Steeple Ashton to take his total for the season to 50 which should see him collect his second consecutive golden boot.

Alan Fodder beat three players before making it 3-0 and Neil Grant jumped on a rebound to knock home number four. Paulin Mbekop completed Holt's tally.

Blue Circle Saints' 2-1 defeat of Sutton Benger moved the cement boys clear of the drop zone and although they didn't know it at the time, their win, coupled with Somerford's loss ensured that they would spend next season in Division Two.

Shaun Sheppard and Graham Deveney's goals sandwiched Alex Prowting's first goal of the season for Benger.

Division Three

FOUR Seasons maintained their interest in the title race as a 4-1 home victory over Bradstone Rovers saw them close the gap to leaders Parsons Nose to just two points.

Parsons Nose must take at least a point away at Westbury Rangers B on Sunday.

Should Parsons Nose lose and Dave Austin's Four Seasons team win the title will be settled on goal difference and the Seasons are well ahead of their rivals, having scored 11 more goal.

Adam Sheffield hit Bradstone's consolation.

Alan Davies returned to Old Lane United's starting line up for his first game for five months and scored the opening goal as they defeated Trowbridge Town Supporters' Club 3-2.

Gary McLoughlin and Ross Heard struck twice to hand the lead to the Town but further goals from Ben Husband and Kia Pritchard earned the Old Lane their win.

Hare and Hounds picked up the win that they needed to catapult themselves above Corsham Park Rangers into third place after they beat Westbury Rangers B 2-0.

Goals from Leigh Wells, who drilled home a 35 yard screamer, and Nick Morris, who headed home after Niall McLean's cross, gave the Devizes-based team their best ever finish to a season.
