VILLAGERS in Winsley have been doing their bit to get the place spruced up for summer and spent the morning tidying roads and footpaths on Saturday.
About 15 volunteers came forward for the Saturday Scrape and got to work with spades clearing the kerbsides and paths.
The idea for the first clean-up operation was put forward after residents complained the council cleaning machines were not getting to the smaller lanes and paths in the village and they were looking neglected.
Residents decided to take the clean-up into their own hands .
The first team of Saturday Scrapers stepped out in the torrential rain in December but Saturday's team had better conditions for the job.
Organiser Marjorie Beale said: "We did a great job but you are limited to the amount you can do with just a morning to work in.
"The idea is to prove just how much we can achieve as a community with the roads on our doorstep.
"We'd like to do a clean-up event in the future and it would be nice to encourage some of the teenagers in the village to take part."
Volunteers were rewarded with tea and buns in the Village Hall provided by the village Women's Institute.
