ENGLISH patriotism was on show in Trowbridge as a grandmother and her one-year-old granddaughter celebrated St George's Day in style.

Decked out in a red and white sequined outfit and plumed hat, Sally Taylor and her granddaughter Ellen Wilkinson delighted shoppers on Friday by handing out silk roses.

Celebrating the patron saint of England's special day has become a tradition for Mrs Taylor, but her sister Averil Beresford, who is usually spotted helping out with celebrations, was sunning herself in Bournemouth this year.

Bringing toddler Ellen in on the family act, Mrs Taylor, of Victoria Gardens, said: "People were ever so happy to see us. Some were trying to give us money but we were giving the roses away. Ellen really enjoyed it. We practiced at home with dolly and teddy beforehand.

"When it came to it she handed all the roses out and kept putting her hand out for more.

"We took one rose to the museum and another to the town council offices. I think we should be proud to be English."

Children at Staverton Primary School celebrated St George's Day with a musical evening on Friday, which showcased the talents of the pupils.

Year 6 pupils read pieces recounting St George's place in history, while the recorder, performing arts and country dance groups demonstrated their skills. Pupils who are members of the West Wilts Junior Wind Band had learned a country dance tune which they played for the dancers, and there was a chance for parents to join in.
