A Trowbridge man who helped a friend break into his mother's house has been jailed after failing to do his community service.

Philip Haeckel escaped being given a prison term more than two and a half years ago after he admitted his part in the raid on the pal's former home.

But the 21-year-old failed to complete the 180 hours of community service he was ordered to do during the past 20 months and despite the sentence being deferred last year to give him another chance, Haeckel failed to do the work and even did not return to court.

A judge jailed him for eight months on Monday saying it was the only option as he had been given 'chance after chance' and wouldn't co-operate.

Haeckel, who used his knowledge of fitting double glazing to help the friend break into his former home while the family were away, admitted a charge of burglary.

A week after being sentenced to 180 hours community service for the burglary he was ordered to do a further 60 hours for driving while disqualified.

Haeckel, of Langford Road, Trowbridge, did 142 and a half hours of the total of 240 hours.

Paul Orton, defending, told Swindon crown court that his client had not continued to offend and had just started a new job. He said that his client had struggled to come to terms with his guilt for helping his friend.
