PURTON bid to beat Arsenal to the accolade of completing their entire league campaign unbeaten by avoiding defeat in their final match of the season.

Alan Clark's side clinched the Division One West title with a 3-1 win over Quarry Nomads last weekend.

A tough trip to Ardley beckons tomorrow and Purton are just 90 minutes away from finishing with an unblemished record.

That feat was last achieved in the Hellenic League in 1967/68 when Henley Town won the old Division One title without losing a game.

Purton boss Alan Clark thinks matching that mark will place his team alongside the greats.

"It's a really big game for us," he said. Getting this record is just as important as winning the league, if not more so.

"Someone has to win the league every year, but to go through the season unbeaten is something a bit special."

Clark could not have asked for a trickier test to end on though.

"Ardley are as good a side as any in this league, they are always in the top three or four and it's a tough fixture to finish with," said the Purton manager.

"We can't let them beat us. We will settle for a draw but we will go there knowing we are good enough to get a result."

Clark will have a fully-fit squad to choose from as he bids to make club history.

Shrivenham completed their Division One West programme with a 2-1 win over Witney on Tuesday but Alan Dyton and co will be keeping a close eye on developments at the top of the table tomorrow.

Shrivy currently occupy second spot and a guaranteed promotion place but Ross are just a point behind and entertain lowly Middle Barton in their last fixture.

Shrivenham have the advantage of a superior goal difference but a Ross victory will see them leapfrog Dyton's outfit to come second.

That would leave Shrivenham facing an anxious wait to see if third place would be enough to warrant elevation to the Premier at the discretion of league officials.

Meanwhile, Cirencester United have little left to play for but pride.

United will finish fourth-from-bottom regardless of their result at Headington.
