AS a lifelong law-abiding citizen with a Disclosure which clears me to work with children, I get the impression that I may be one of the very few to be passionately opposed to the introduction of an identity card.

The thought that there will come a time when I will have to have my card scanned just to use the WC on Paddington Station fills me with utter dread.

As for Mr Blunkett's suggestion that the system will only be introduced when it has been made foolproof. Hah!

The problem with foolproof systems is that the people clever enough to abuse them are obviously not fools.

Views such as: I would be happy to carry a card but I do not want to pay for it; only the people with something to hide would be against this and I have already got so many pieces of plastic in my wallet, one more is not going to make any difference, have really angered me.

The revelation that even the Royal Family will have to carry cards is something I really find oh-so reassuring. Not.
