HIGHWORTH waved goodbye to their hopes of silverware yesterday and also bid a fond farewell to two stalwarts.

The Swindon side were beaten 4-3 by Brackley in a thrilling Hellenic League Supplementary Cup final at Abingdon and veterans Dave Webb and Andy Wollen duly confirmed they will be hanging their boots up with immediate effect.

But the duo will remain at the Elms as part of the club's coaching staff next term.

Webb started his career at Forest Green and spent several seasons with Southern League heavyweights Gloucester City before eventually settling at Highworth.

Defender Wollen, son of former Swindon Town star Terry, has played for Newport Isle of Wight, Gloucester, Supermarine and Cirencester among others.

Highworth boss John Fisher was quick to play tribute to the duo.

"They have both been a credit to local football," he said. "Everyone in Swindon will they are not only good footballers but really nice people.

"I'm looking forward to working with them next season.

"They still have a lot to offer the club and our younger players can learn a lot from them."

Neither player got the chance to take part in yesterday's epic, in which Highworth lost to a late goal in extra time.

Trailing 2-0 at the break, Fisher's side roared back to go 3-2 ahead through Ian McSherry, Pete Macklin and Paul Cooper.

But Brackley levelled in the last minute of normal time and repeated the trick in the additional half hour when Paul Lamb headed home despite an apparent foul on goalkeeper Elliott Jackson.

Devizes romped to a record 14-0 home win over Elmore in the Screwfix Premier Division.

Justin Porter led the scoring with five and there were singles from Nathan Sheridan, Andy Coombes, Kevin Bush, Steve Bush, Nick Taylor, Gary Campbell, Marcus Wallen, Simon Drewitt and Craig Kennedy.

Chippenham Town fans, still mourning their club's failure to qualify for the new Conference Two, were given something to smile about as arch rivals Bath also missed the boat.

The Romans were beaten 3-2 by Dorchester in their Dr Martens Premier Division play-off match.

Dorchester will now face Tiverton who defeated Chelmsford 1-0 for a place in the higher league.

Merthyr Tydfil and Western Division champions Redditch will play for the second invitation.

The latter beat Eastern Division counterparts Kings Lynn 1-0 in their play-off showdown.
