Faced with a huge choice of restaurants, cafes and bars in Bath, it's easy to get a little dazed. Follow our guide to a few of the best and make sure you book ahead.
Restaurants
The Moon and Sixpence, 6a Broad Street (01225) 460962
Based in a Bath stone warehouse, down a cobbled passage off Broad Street, this restaurant is a true favourite of Bathonians. The food is modern-international and the menu is quite pricey with main meals costing around £13-£14 - but it rarely disappoints. There is a decked area for outside courtyard dining in the summer, which makes it all the more special.
Las Iguanas, The Seven Dials (01225) 336666
You can eat your way around the world in Bath. This Mexican restaurant, part of a small chain, serves tasty dishes, some lethal cocktails and also does a great hangover breakfast. There's a value-for-money £7 lunch, with main meals heading towards the pricey end of the range. If you can get a table in the small courtyard, it's a great place to dine in summer.
Demuths, 2 North Parade Passage (01225) 446059
Hot colours and modern artwork enliven the walls in this excellent vegetarian and vegan restaurant, also a caf by day. Demuths runs a vegetarian cookery school too and has a good range of dishes on its mouthwatering menu with prices from £10 upwards for main courses.
The Firehouse Rotisserie, 2 John Street (01225) 482070
This restaurant is one of Bath's biggest success stories and comes highly recommended by publications such as Tatler, GQ, The Observer and The Daily Mail. The Fenton's, who run the restaurant, specialise in pizzas and Californian food, including flame roasted meats, Pacific grills and vegetarian foods. Prices are around £10 upwards for main courses.
Cafes, bars and pubs
Retro Caf, York Street (01225) 339347
Recently voted the best caf in Bath, the Retro Caf has a distinctly bohemian atmosphere. It offers tasty lunches of hot-dogs, panninis and home-made burgers and snacks. There is a friendly clientele.
The Pump Room, Abbey Churchyard (01225) 444477
The Pump Room is an interesting and refined place to take tea or have lunch. The clientele is often regaled by the Pump Room Trio in the mornings or a pianist in the afternoons, and here people can also taste the spa waters if they're feeling brave. The menu can be pricey.
The Raincheck Bar, 34 Monmouth Street (01225) 444770
A great bar that often spills out onto the streets on summer evenings. Has a big range of cocktails on the menu, beers, fruit juices and coffees, with food served at lunchtime. Located near the theatre and the offices of a national magazine publisher.
The Star Inn, 23 The Vineyards (01225) 425072
Reputedly the oldest inn in Bath, it has a historic interior listed by the Campaign for Real Ale and is owned and operated by Bath's only brewery, Abbey Ales.
