THREE raiders brandishing a gun burst into a pizza takeaway in a late- night raid, escaping with what police called a "large sum".

The men broke into the back of Domino's Pizza in High Street, Old Town, at 1.30am yesterday.

A handgun left by one of the raiders was found at the takeaway.

And now detectives are trying to piece together what happened. It is thought one of the raiders had a gun and another a machete. A source also said there was £9,000 in the till.

A £500 reward has been put up for information leading to the conviction of the offenders. All three wore balaclavas. One wore a light-coloured three-quarter length jacket, and another, a dark grey jacket.

Franchise owner James Swift, who also runs outlets in Bath, Newbury, Malvern in Worcestershire and has plans for a fifth in Abbey Meads, refused to comment. The High Street takeaway is one of Domino's top three in the UK and is in the top ten per cent in the whole of Europe.

In October 2000 a man wielding a meat cleaver stole money that staff were attempting to deposit at the HBSC bank in Newport Street.
