WEST Swindon councillors have been asked to show their support to the Forest Not Stadium campaign by promising to resign should the stadium be built at Shaw.
Alan Hayward, organiser of the Swindon Forest Protection Group, put the suggestion to the five councillors yesterday.
In a letter he said: "Given that you have all publicly stated your opposition to the proposals, I would like to ask you to make a statement that if the scheme ever gained planning permission then you would resign as councillors."
The letter was sent to councillors Nick Martin, Mary Martin, Garry Perkins, Doug Stewart and Steve Wakefield.
Since the plans for a 22,000 all-seater stadium and sports village complex first became public, all five of the West Swindon councillors have voiced their opposition.
Mr Hayward is now awaiting a response from the five councillors.
On Saturday, about 1,000 people turned out to protest about the council's plans to build on three green spaces the stadium site at Shaw Forest, Coate and the Front Garden.
