GAZETTE & HERALD: DEFENDANT Benjamin Roberts has been warned he faces a jail term after admitting carrying out a sex attack on a woman.

Roberts, of Avebury Road, Chippenham, pleaded guilty to charges of indecent assault and assault occasioning actual bodily harm against the same woman.

The 28-year-old also pleaded not guilty to a count of rape against the victim when he appeared at Swindon Crown Court on Friday.

The three charges all relate to Thursday March 4 this year.

Michael Longman, prosecuting, said that the Crown Prosecution Service accepted the pleas and would ask for the rape charge to lie on the file after sentence.

Mr Longman said that the indecent assault would reflect all of the allegations of a sexual nature made by the woman.

Ian Halliday, defending, said that his client had pleaded guilty and accepted everything that the victim had alleged, though he denied rape.

"He has entered guilty pleas to indecent assault and actual bodily harm and will have to be sentenced according to his pleas," he said.

"My clients' capacity to recollect that evening appears to be quite limited.

"He understands he will be sentenced according to the victim's statement."

Adjourning the matter so the probation service could prepare a pre-sentence report, Recorder Ian Lawrie told Roberts he could face jail.

"In the light of your pleas you have entered today and the charges which are accepted this matter will have to be resolved on July 2 by way of sentence," he said.

"In the meantime a full pre-sentence report is ordered on the clear understanding there is a very high likelihood that a custodial sentence will be an option.

"We need to know about your background, the background to the cases and your reaction to them."

He released Roberts on bail on condition that he lives and sleeps at his home in Chippenham, has no contact at all with the victim and stays out of Calne.

Roberts will also have to register as a sex offender.
