13310/3FARMER Jane Young, 60, is preparing for a gruelling trek in memory of her husband who died of bowel cancer ten years ago.

Mrs Young, from Enford, will be raising money for the Cancer Research Bobby Moore Fund which is a cause close to her heart.

Mrs Young and her childhood sweetheart Brian married in 1966 as England celebrated its World Cup win and Bobby Moore was a hero.

Tragically 27 years later when the footballer died from bowel cancer Mr Young was also taken ill and died just seven weeks after being diagnosed from the same disease.

So when Mrs Young saw a letter in the Gazette from Bobby Moore's widow Stephanie looking for people to take part in a trek across Patagonia to raise money for research, she knew she had to volunteer.

Mrs Young said: "I hope Brian would be proud of me. As soon as I saw the letter I knew this was something I had to do.

"It has taken me ten years to start to feel anywhere normal again.

"Brian was my first boyfriend and the true love of my life."

After he died she took on running the couple's 500 acre arable farm herself.

Mrs Young, who has three grown up children and a grandchild, is no stranger to charity work and was awarded the MBE for her endeavours in 2000.

"I started helping Romanian orphans at Christmas time because I didn't want to be a burden on my family," she said.

"I have also been involved in helping children from Chernobyl but this is a bit different because it is for Brian.''

She wants to raise about £4,000 for the the charity and is being helped by a Man Alive 2004 party at the Swan in Enford on June 26.

All money raised from the evening that will include jazz music, a wine tasting competition and a raffle will go to cancer research.

Tickets are now on sale priced at £5 and can be got from the pub by ringing (01980) 670338.
